How do we keep our swimming pool crystal clear? Here are a few details: Strantrol Chemical Controller The heart of our pool system is the Strantrol Chemical Controller. It is a computer controlled device that monitors the chlorine and PH levels of the water 24 hours a day, and distributes both our chlorine solution and acid based on the settings that are input into the computer. We meet state guidelines by keeping the water between 1.5-4.0 parts per million chlorine, and a PH level of 7.0-7.4 at all times. Chlorine kills bacteria, while acid controls the PH level of the water. Unbalanced water leads to bacteria, cloudy water, algae growth, and the familiar 'Burning Eyes' with unbalanced PH levels.
Pulsar III Chlorinator The Pulsar III Chlorinator with Booster System was installed in 2005. It is connected to the Strantrol Chemical Controller, and produces a chlorinated solution that is pumped into the pool return line at intervals determined by the controller. The suction line that feeds the solution is connected to a 3/4 horsepower booster pump to maintain 30-40lb. pressure on the system at all times to ensure that the chemical feed is constant. Prior to installing the booster in 2005, we experienced varying feed rates of chlorine that resulted in problems with cloudy water and algae growth during the high bather loads and very warm water during peak season. Since 2005 when the new system was installed, we have had no problems with algae growth or cloudy water.

A new gunite / marbleized concrete surface was installed, as well as race lane and wall tiles, new coping, ladders, skimmers and plumbing for the entire pool; all supply and return lines replaced underground.
In 1998 the Lodge also purchased the safety cover. It keeps leaves and debris out of the pool when closed, and also provides a safety boundry and lengthens the life of our pool and saves water costs. It is manufactured by Loop-Loc and cost approx $10,000.00. It is strong enough to support a Volkswagen Beetle or an Elephant going across it. We keep the pool during the winter full of water and feed it chlorine throughout the winter to control algae growth to save money on water costs. In 2004, we purchased 2 'Big Dipper' pool slides manufactured by S.R. Smith, the worlds leading manufacturer of pool deck equipment. We also purchased the 'Easy Ladder' to enable elderly or handicapped bathers to enter the pool with ease. In 2007, both of the diving stands stainless steel railings were refurbished by Maintenance Sheet Metal of Roanoke, VA at an approx cost of $2000.00 Kiddie Pool: Gallons: 6,000 Main Pump: 1 horsepower, 120v Filtration Rate: 40 Gallons per minute = Entire pool is filtered over approx. 10 times a day, exceeding state guidelines. Typical Bather Load: 10-15 'kiddies' Upgrades: In 2003 the kiddie pool had a new skimmer installed, as well as a beautiful new surface of marbleized concrete with blue specks installed by National Pools of Roanoke at a cost of approx $5,000.00. This new surface has a fine grit to ensure that our kiddies do not slip easily while playing. Prior to the new surface installation, we had to paint the entire pool surface which was slippery. We also purchased a round safety pool cover to keep the debris out during the winter to cut operation costs and lengthen the life of the pool.
In May 2007, the kiddie pool received another facelift - installation of new coping and tile, along with rubberized expansion joints at the cost of approx $4,000.00 In May 2009, the kiddie pool was changed from a manual chlorinated pool to on an automated Pulsar System 2.5 controller, with automated chlorine dispensing. This will allow a more constant even feed of chemicals to ensure that the water quality is always correct.
